Longs Drugs opening in Poipu

Longs Drugs store is projected to open in mid October 2015 at The Shops at Kukui'ula.  Other corporate businessess are making it's way to the south shore of Kauai.
  • Sueoka's in Koloa town will eventually operate under the ownership of ABC stores.
  • Menehune Mart in Lawai has turned over it's operations to 7 Eleven.
Many mom and pop stores on Kauai are obviously not interested or unable to proceed forward into Kauai's future.   How and will that change the character of the island?

National Tropical Botanical Garden - Dec 1 Sunday event -Craft Fair & Entertainment

Sunshine, slippahs, and Santa’ on December 1
Press Release, 11/20/2013
NTBG’s 10th Annual Christmas in the Garden Craft Fair

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Po‘ipū, Kaua‘i (November 20, 2013) — No heavy winter coats or jostling through crowded department stores here! Only on the Garden Isle does Christmas shopping mean a “slippah-footed” stroll through a tropical garden. Lucky you live Kaua‘i where you can start the holiday season with a fun and relaxing day at the National Tropical Botanical Garden’s Christmas in the Garden holiday craft fair on Sunday, December 1 from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Located on the sprawling grounds of NTBG’s Southshore Visitors Center in Po‘ipū, across from Spouting Horn, this ever-popular craft fair is known for its beautiful garden setting and wide selection of locally made and imported gifts.

This 10th annual Christmas in the Garden brings together about 40 of the island’s most exciting crafters, artists, vendors, performers, and casual dining options. Shop for Kaua‘i Made original products from Aunty Lilikoi, Salty Wahine, Shinil Candle & Soap, Hawaiian Organic Noni, Nui Fashions, and many others. In addition to clothing, jewelry, art, handmade quilts, and countless other crafts, Christmas in the Garden will be selling live plants and fresh tropical flowers.

Spread out across the shady meadow of the Southshore Visitors center will be keiki fun stations where children can enjoy arts and crafts, games, puppet shows, and a workshop by local artist Patrick Ching. As you “browse, graze, and shop” in the shade of monkey pod trees, take in the entertainment: Ka Lei Mokihana O Leina‘ala Pavao-Jardin hula (10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.), Kamaka Fernandez’s contemporary Hawaiian music (11:45 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.), and Renee Janton with her Harp ‘Ohana (1:15 p.m. – 2:45 p.m.). From 3 p.m. – 3:45 p.m., the Sunshine Express, Kalāheo’s keiki Christmas choir, will be performing.

As you wander through the garden taking in the sunshine and an ocean view, pause for lunch from Yanagi Sushi, the Kaua‘i Food Truck, and enjoy snacks and drinks from Kaua‘i Coffee and other vendors. NTBG also asks that everyone bring at least one non-perishable or canned food item as a donation for the Hawai‘i Food Bank.

For more information on Christmas in the Garden, call (808) 742-2433.

National Tropical Botanical Garden is dedicated to saving plants, saving people. The not-for-profit, non-governmental institution has nearly 2,000 acres of gardens and preserves in Hawai‘i and Florida. Its mission is to enrich life through discovery, scientific research, conservation, and education by perpetuating the survival of plants, ecosystems, and cultural knowledge of tropical regions. NTBG is supported primarily through donations and grants.

Poipu property sold for $13,000,000 and a BIG mushroom

Top news of the day for Kauai real estate was the sale of 21.45 acres of vacant, resort designated, Poipu land. The "Royal Palms" property, located in the heart of Poipu, was purchased from Kiahuna Fund LLC/etal for $13,000,000 this morning. The new buyers were represented by Yamanake Enterprises Inc. realtors from Hilo, Hawaii. The "Royal Palms" property was one of approximately a dozen Poipu projects that had high hopes of profitting from the Kauai resort market. Per various "Royal Palms" press releases back in 2006 and 2007, the developers intended to build 164 units of 1,2,3 bedroom condos and intended to sell them for $600,000 to $1,300,000 a unit. However, that was not to be, and the property was left undeveloped since 2007. The property is located mauka of the Poipu Shopping Village center and is located next to the Kiahuna Golf Course. So what does this say about the Poipu market? Curious minds want to know :)

On the lighter side of life in Poipu....how's this BIG mushroom found growing on the Kihuna Golf Course?

A good place to eat on Kauai

Breakfast: 6:30-11:30 daily and all day Sundays, Lunch: 11:00-2:30. Sun 11:00-2:00
Dinner: Tues thru Thurs night 5:00-8:30, Fri & Sat nights: 5:00-9:00
Phone: 808-332-5858

Kalaheo Cafe and Coffee Co.  is a favorite restaurant for Kauai locals as well as Kauai visitors.  Of course, if you live on Kauai or visit Kauai regularly, you already know that!     We especially like it because of our relationship with the owners, John and Kris Ferguson. They are hardworking, good people.  Our 25 year old sons have been best friends since kindergarten, so yes, we're a little biased!

I think you'll like this place from the moment you walk in.  My hope is that you'll not only enjoy a delicious meal, but that you'll make some new friends!   Mahalo John and Kris for providing a great place to fill our tummies.  You guys are such a viable asset to the southside community!

Be sure to tell them you read this blog!  Support Kauai businesses!

Things to do on Kauai

Koloa Landing Resort, Putting Contest 3/28/12

On the far left, Roy took home 1st prize ($25 gift certificate for the Market Place).  David and his son, Jason split second (Arnold Palmer ice tea).  In the final "Closest to the Pin" special, David edged out the competition and claimed the "Hele on to Kauai" Island Favorites CD recorded by Tim Mira.  We didn't have a prize for Staci's "Highest Score"  :) ,  but we're working on it!

It was another perfect sunny afternoon in Poipu for fun and fellowship.  I can't wait to see who's coming out next week!  And remember, tie or beat my 3 under score and you'll be playing with me as my guest at Kiahuna Golf Course!      Aloha, Tim

Miss Hawaii 2012 visits Church on the Beach, Kauai, Hawaii

Lauren Cheape, Miss Hawaii 2012,  is seen here with one of the youngsters as she dances the hula worshiping the Lord.

Hanapepe Town Park (photo below) hosted us for our March community event.

Kauai Bible's "Church on the Beach" outreach ministry starts off with getting coffee and pastries to it's guests, offering special prayer for specific needs, continues with prize giveaways, then transforms to a  formal service that opens with praise and worship music, including a 10 minute message, followed by a cash offering to the people, and concluding with a hot lunch to demonstrate God's love, provision and a reminder of hope and a future with Him.

Lauren shared her testimony of how God allowed her to become a "jump rope phenom" and use that talent to reach thousands of youth with the good news of the Lord.

Resident Golf at Kukui`ula

Golfing in one of four daily tee-times reserved for Kauai residents at Kukuiula.  Standing on the 18th green with Christian brother, Roger Medd, off camera were George Kanna and Todd Yamase who made up the foursome.
